Beneath the Surface FAQ's
- What are the dates for Beneath the Surface? Registration starts June 10. You can begin tracking your reading right away. The last date to sign up is July 31 and the last date to log your pages is August 14.
- What are the age limits for Beneath the Surface? Teens and pre-teens entering grades 6-12 in the fall are eligible for Beneath the Surface.
- How do I sign up for Beneath the Surface? You can register online by clicking the registration link above. You’ll need to select a user name and password as part of the registration process - be sure to remember it! You can also pick up a registration form at the library and turn it in at the reference desk.
- Do I have to connect my summer reading account to Facebook? Nope, that’s optional. It’s a great way to share what you’re reading and pass recommendations on to your friends, but it’s not required.
- What do I have to do to win Beneath the Surface? Winning! All you need to do is read 1000 pages between June 10 and August 14. Everybody who wins gets 4 prizes (one at 250 pages, one at 500 pages, one at 750 pages and one at 1000 pages) and will be entered into the grand prize drawing for a $100 Barnes and Noble gift card!
- How do I keep a record of my reading? There are two ways to keep track of your reading. You can pick up a Beneath the Surface booklet from the reference desk and color in the book spines (one spine = 50 pages). Or, you can click the registration link above to login and track your pages online.

How do I pick up my prizes? To pick up your prizes, visit the desk in the teen space during the following times:

- Wait, there are PRIZES? Yep! There are four chances to earn prizes - at 250 pages, 500 pages, 750 pages, and 1000 pages.
- What should I read? Whatever you want! Summer reading is all about choice and reading for fun - novels, nonfiction, magazines, graphic novels, audiobooks, whatever. Required summer reading for school counts too. Find great suggestions and summer reading lists from Milton schools here.
- How do I contact the library? Call the Reference Desk at 617-898-5757 or contact Emily Calkins, the Young Adult Librarian at ecalkins[at]ocln[dot]org. Our summer hours are Monday-Tuesday-Wednesday 9am to 9pm, Thursday 1pm to 9pm, Friday 9am to 5:30pm, and Saturday 9am to 5pm.
